Skylar Grey

There are only a few things that I know of, that I am a die hard fan of (musically speaking)- The only two worth mentioning, being The Trans-Siberian Orchestra and now more recently Skylar Grey. In early december of 2010, I was listening to Pandora Radio, while doing homework. In 2 hours, the song "Coming Home" played twice. By the second time it played, I knew the chorus by heart and I started to become attached to the song. I had always seen, "Coming Home" by Diddy-Dirty Money Feat. Skylar Grey. To me and I believe most other people, no one knew who Skylar Grey or what she had done in the Music Business, when in fact, if anyone had listened to Top 40 radio stations even for ten minutes, would have heard at least one of the three versions of "Love the Way You Lie," which, as most people do not know, was written by Skylar Grey. After researching (Google-ing) Skylar Grey, I became a loyal fan. When I found out that she was nominated for Grammy for Best Song for "Love the Way You Lie" I was going crazy. I was so happy because I realized that this would be the ground breaking moment for her career as Skylar Grey. Then to my surprise a couple of days before the Grammy's she announced via Twitter, that she would be performing with Eminem and Dr. Dre at the Grammy's. About a week before that, "I Need a Doctor" was released. This song was number 1 on the charts for weeks. This year first year nominees were required to write a short essay explaining what it was like, and their inspirations. Skylar talked about how modern music is really losing the emotion behind it, and the whole idea of music is to express emotion. She talked about how she wrote "Love the Way You Lie" from emotion, and wanted it to express emotion. She said that the fact that her song was nominated and was such a success shows that people really do want emotional driven music. Music is a way of expressing the un-expressable. Music is its own universal language for all living things. Although some of Skylar's choruses or hooks seem to be simple on the outside, they are in fact deep in meaning and emotion on the inside, making them complex, just like how emotions are simple on the outside, but can get endlessly complex on the inside. Some modern music has formed into being completely electronically made, through auto-tuning and synthesizing, but how can complex human emotions and thoughts be described through a machine made sound, no matter what the thought is? The truth is... it can't. Not only is the music that Skylar writes complex but the complimenting lyrics are too. Skylar's lyrics are not like Ketchup (Glozell Reference) thrown on a piece of paper. They are true poetry that has a meaning and a purpose. Together her music and lyrics bring together what we feel. I bet that if 100 people were asked to listen to the chorus of "Coming Home" and describe what it means, and what emotion it has, most people would give different answers, even though the words and music from the outside seem to be simple, they have a different effect on everyone, just as everybody's emotions whether happy or sad are always different. But if you were also to take another top 40 song (I won't name any) and ask the same 100 people to describe the chorus and the emotion which it reflects, I would bet that the majority of the 100 would say the same thing. I'm not saying that the second song is bad music, what I am saying is that the quality and depth of the songs are different. The fact that each and everyone of Skylar's songs have been a success show that what people want now is emotionally driven music. Skylar and other artists are paving the way for the music industry and therefore are going to be big hits.

Because of this, to me Skylar is a mentor, inspiration, and idol. As a singer and aspiring songwriter, Skylar is my role model. As I start working more on song writing, I will always keep in mind what I have learned from her: Music should reflect your emotion.

A couple of weeks ago I almost had the amazing opportunity to meet Ms. Grey at SXSW but as fate would just so have it, I was in Houston for those two days. I was torn over the fact that I missed that opportunity, because as I think most people would realize, meeting your role model, is achieving a big dream. I hope that one day I will meet her, and have a chance to get to know her. Who knows maybe she will see this post.
